: : Electromagnetic brakes do exist. They are of two types. First is mechanical type and the other is Eddy Current type.
: : In the mechanical electromagnetic brake, the coil or solenoid attracts a steel disc. The steel disc presses a brake disc made of sintered or asbestos material between itself and a stationary steel disc. The torque is thus 'grounded' and braking action takes place. This type of brake is used in machines like lathes, presses etc.
: : The Eddy Current brake does not have a mechanical friction plate. The 'eddy' currents induced by the magnetic coil in a steel disc result in a braking torque. The braking action is dependant on the relative speed between the magentic coil and the braking steel disc. The braking torque reduces as the speed also falls. Hence it does not bring the braking disc to a halt in a jiffy.
: : Both the types have their uses.
: : With a small modification, both types can also be used as electromagnetic clutches to transmit motion and power.
